the fallout fallout

Fallout 3 is a heady drug, one of my favorite video games in decades. If Fallout 2 is even one tenth as intoxicating, I will be a very happy man. I was delighted to find the older version of Fallout available for download from a web site full of nice touches, including the real-time feedback on the registration page, the simplicity of the narrative structure and a thoroughly contemporary sense of humor. (Just check out the options listed under ‘gender’ when you register!)

Also, it’s worth navigating through the age gate at http://fallout.bethsoft.com and into the section labeled “Vault.” Reading about the approach of the design team to big stuff like the game’s conceptual design and “little” stuff like creating collectibles to help market the game, I am awed by the team’s immersion in detail and single-minded determination to get to something absolutely amazing.
